H.M.S. Plym. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve  who was found drowned on the 12th May 1943 aged 20 years.

The son of  Murdo and Alexandrina Grant , 45 Midmills Road, Inverness.

H.M.S Plym had been built at Smith's Dock shipyard at South Bank and formally commissioned into the Royal Navy four days after his death.

The ship, a River Class Frigate was later used as the detonation platform for the UK's first nuclear in weapon in Operation Hurricane.  A 25-kiloton Atom Bomb was detonated a few seconds before 09:30 local time on the  3rd October 1952 approximately 400 metres (440 yards) from the island of Trimouille in the Monte Bello Islands, Western Australia. Although data acquisition would have been simplified by detonating the bomb from a tower above the ground or sea surface, it was conducted aboard 'Plym' in order to simulate the effects of a nuclear weapon being smuggled into a British harbour aboard a ship.

  • Private Owen McQuilling, 14347832

8th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Born 16.4.23, killed in action 5.10.43. Son of Hugh and Ada McQuilling, elder brother Hugh and younger twin sisters Kathleen and Maureen. Born in Grangetown, raised on Argyll Road, attending St Marys RC school and St Peter's RC South Bank. In 1938 at the age of 15, Owen took himself off to work in London at numerous hotels. His letters home during this time painted such a bad picture that it prompted his father to travel to London to bring him home. Owen then worked in Smiths Dock in South Bank and Cargo Fleet 34 Mill. In 1943, Owen was 20 when he was called up to serve in the 8th Battallion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, dispatched to Italy to support the Allied campaign. Their aim was to clear the area north of the Sangro River as the Allies invaded the Italian mainland, which coincided with an armistice made with the Italians. Sadly, after serving just a month, Owen's battalion faced resistance from German troops and Owen was killed in action; he was laid to rest in the Sangro River war cemetery. Owen's father Hugh was awarded Owen's posthumous war medals - the 1939 - 45 star, the Italy star and the War medal 1939 - 45. A few years after the war ended, the Royal British Legion arranged for Owen's parents to visit his resting place. Additionally, in 2004, Owen's nephew made the trip to Italy to pay his respects on behalf of the family. Lest we forget.
